Lot Description
|
|
Jacket worn by the legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant during his four year stint as head football coach of the Texas A & M Aggies. Bryant's first year in 1954 started with the infamous Junction City training camp and ended with a disappointing 1 and 9 won - lost record. The survivors of that season would form the heart of teams that would go 24-5-2 over the next 3 seasons. The jacket comes directly from the family of former Texas A & M baseball coach Tom Chandler, who led the Aggie baseball team for 26 years from 1959 thru 1984 and is a member of the National Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. Chandler received the jacket his first year as head coach at A & M. He was informed by trainer Smokey Harper that they did not have any baseball workout stuff and was told to go into the storage room and pick out what he wanted from a large trunk of old football stuff waiting to be tossed. He picked the offered jacket because it was light weight yet still very warm. It was only after many years of wear that his wife noticed the "Bryant" stitching inside the front tail. According to his wife, Tom would later say that the luck from the jacket must have rubbed off on him as the Aggies won the Southwest Conference baseball title during his first year as head coach. "B & B Sporting Goods Co. Waco, Texas" and "Size 46 Southland Basketball Jacket" tags in collar. Maroon "Texas Aggies" in felt letters across the front with maroon trim around the collar and waistband. Large 2 3/4" long "Bryant" stitched inside right side of front tail between 2nd and 3rd buttons. Jacket still in good condition. 90% of maroon paint has worn off the snap on buttons on the front. LOA from the Chandler family plus a copy of the book "The Junction Boys" which pictures Bryant wearing the jacket and has been signed on the inside front page by Tom Chandler below an account of how he came to possess the jacket.
