Portion of proceeds to benefit the Kirk Gibson Foundation

Los Angeles (October 19, 2010) – Kirk Gibson’s walk-off home run during Game 1 of the 1988 World Series is one of the most iconic events in Dodgers and World Series history. Now, 22 years later, Gibson has decided to put some of the key memorabilia from that electrifying moment up for auction. Renowned sports card and memorabilia auction company SCP Auctions, Inc., announced that their mid-November auction will include Gibson’s bat, batting helmet, home and road uniforms, World Series trophy and Most Valuable Player award. Proceeds from the sale of the World Series trophy and MVP award will benefit the Kirk Gibson Foundation.

With the underdog Dodgers trailing the Oakland A’s in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, injured Gibson was called on to pinch hit. His dramatic and historic game-winning home run for the Dodgers against A’s reliever Dennis Eckersley is regarded as one of the greatest home runs of all time by Time magazine and was voted as the greatest moment in L.A. sports history. It is described as the turning point of the series that the Dodgers went on to win, 4-1.

“I was never really a collector,” said Gibson, manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks. “As I looked at it and I started thinking about where I am in my life, I don’t want to have to worry about making sure these items are secure somewhere. I just felt like maybe it’s time to let the people who do like to collect things and display them buy them and then take some of the proceeds and fund my foundation. I want to make sure those scholarship funds go on forever in my parents’ names.”

The proceeds from the World Series trophy and MVP award will be donated to the Kirk Gibson Foundation to continue his support of Michigan State University athletic programs and to help fund his partial scholarship programs at Clarkston (Mich.) High School and Waterford (Mich.) High School, in honor of his parents, who were educators at those schools.

“SCP Auctions is honored and thrilled to be selected by Kirk Gibson to auction these items associated with one of the most famous home runs in World Series history,” said SCP President David Kohler. “It was a miracle home run that created a storybook moment right out of a Hollywood script. We are confident the items from this iconic moment will generate huge interest from Dodgers fans and baseball and World Series collectibles buffs alike.”

In addition to Gibson’s memorabilia, the auction will feature more that 1,400 offerings, including a Pete Rose “corked” bat, a Mickey Mantle game-worn jersey, T-206 Honus Wagner and Babe Ruth memorabilia.
